A Four-Week Guide to Configuring a Complete Cloudability Experience

Welcome

Welcome to the four-week setup guide for building a complete Cloudability experience. Before we get started it's worth noting a couple of important items. While this guide covers the core aspects that support the Cloudability experience - achieving an accurate and full cost allocation, driving out financial accountability and providing intelligent cost saving recommendations - not all tasks may be relevant to your organization right now and certainly you may look to complete this guide over an extended period. The point of this guide is to provide a natural flow for onboarding Cloudability, making clear the realised value along the way and connecting you to additional information where helpful.

Week 1 - Add Billing and Utilization Credentials, Map Tag Keys

Summary

This week crucially sees the base cost and utilization data ingested into Cloudability which means the platform is already operational – costs will be categorized via standard dimensions and accessible through initial dashboards, reports and TrueCost Explorer; Some allocation insights will be possible as resource tags are mapped in; Some rightsizing recommendations will show and there's a good opportunity to identify low hanging fruit for immediate savings. Reserved Instance and Savings Plan management will be fully operational. At this stage we recommend only providing platform access to a small handful of users as allocation is incomplete, views aren’t setup and dashboards are basic.

Tasks

Task Who? Goal Outcome/Benefit Details
Add Master Payer Credential(s)

Week 2 - Complete Cost Allocation, Validate "Chargeback"

Summary

This week ends with a notionally complete cost allocation, ready for your IT finance team to start validating "chargeback" or "showback". Custom pricing agreements (e.g. EDP/PPA) you have with your cloud vendor will be reflected within Cloudability giving your finance team a number of options for representing the benefits back to the business. You should make sure the finance team has exposure to the platform, help them begin validation and take meaningful steps towards official chargeback. Since dashboards and Views will be configured in the following week we recommend still limiting user access to a small group.

Week 3 - Full Cloud Financial Governance and Accountability

Summary

Filtered Views & dashboards will be defined for users during this week and official budgets ingested. At the end of this week you should expect to have a fairly complete financial governance story and be in a position to enable cost accountability across delivery teams. As it's possible to grant a full financial management experience, including alerts for budgets and anomalies, stakeholders should progressively be added to the platform. User education and validation that Cloudability has been configured correctly are important tasks to kick-off.

Week 4 – Validation, tweaks and possible extra use cases

Summary

This week is primarily focused on validation and exercising the platform by a wide group of users. Inevitably tweaks will be required to the earlier configuration such as Business Mappings and Views. Depending on your needs this week may pose an opportunity to configure Container Cost Allocation (Kubernetes) or Business Metrics, both of which are advanced Cloud Financial Management concepts.

Task Who? Goal Outcome/Benefit Details

Continue onboarding users, evangelize best practices, receive feedback, address issues

Cloud Center of Excellence

Substantive cost management conversations,  meaningful feedback, configuration updated as needed

A full validation of the roll-out and user experience

Configure Business Metrics*

Cloud Engineer

Configure one business metric for the purpose of unit economics; Include in dashboards

Surface unit economics related to cloud spend (cost per MAU etc.)

Article

Configure Kubernetes container cost allocation*

Cloud Engineer
